Rose proper or common noun?

Dear all,

This is my first post in this forum. Today I came across about the following sentence in my child's exercise book:

"Rose is a beautiful flower."

And her school needed to point out whether "Rose" in the above sentence is a common or proper noun?

I am in great confusion. Please help.

Warm Regards,

Mamon from India.

Hi Mamon,

In this usage, "Rose" is probably a common noun. It is capitalized because it is at the beginning of a sentence.

However, if the statement was a metaphorical statement about a person (e.g. "The girl Rose was like a beautiful flower"), it would be a proper noun.

Welcome to the forum, Mamon (and Kafeen).

I agree with Kafeen. A 'rose' is a type of flower, and thus is a common noun.

The sentence would be far more typical/natural with the plural form:

- Roses are beautiful flowers.

In addition, using 'rose' without an article (a or the), the sentence would be more natural if the reference were to color:

Hello Kaffeen, Yankee and Clive,

Thank you very much for the answer. It helps a lot. In her exercise book, it is written as "Rose is a beautiful flower.". I also think it should preceed with "A" - > A rose is a beautiful flower.

May *** Bless all of us,

Warm Regards,

Mamon.

No!
"The banyan" or "A banyan" would both work. It is NOT a proper noun.

Rose is common noun

I am taking the liberty of correcting the error of the school as rightly pointed out by the others on this forum. So the sentence goes, "A / The rose is a beautiful flower. I believe that in this context, Rose is a proper noun for the common noun "flower" which appears in the predicate. The subject "A/The rose" is talking about a "specific flower" out of the several (beautiful) flowers mention
