Roots and stems

Hi

In addition, she took DHA to repair injured body cells and an herb called Tripterygium wilfordii
(TW), using the roots and stems each day to modulate the immune
system and ease the symptoms of her lupus.

1. Does "roots and stems" mean "herbs" in general? Different herbs?
2. I take it to mean that she was using different herbs every day to somehow change (modulate) her immune system?

Hi newguest In this sentence "roots and stems" are the specific parts of the herb (Tripterygium wilfordii) that the person is using. Plants usually consist of roots (the part that grows in the soil, like a network), the stems (or stalks - the part like a tree trunk), leaves and flowers. Best wishes Mo
