Role of reading "newspaper" and "novels" in improving one's English language skills

Hello,

Is it true that one can improve one's English language skills by reading English newspaper daily, or is it just a myth?

People, especially native speakers, tell me that I should read stuff written by native speakers only if I really intend to be fluent in English, and if I really want that what I say or write sound natural to everyone.

But the problem, here, is that I live in India and newspapers here are edited by Indian editors. So, I cannot get the stuff written by native speakers in these newspapers.

When I'm reading something in these newspapers, I'm thinking "Will it sould natural and/or correct to the native speakers as well." It is not possible for me to write every single line here, and ask you people "Does it sound natural to you?" or "Is it correct English?".

People here speak either the American English or the British English. And I find that most of the newspapers, here, stick to the British English. So, can I make myself assured that by reading these newspapers, I'm actually learning British English, and thus, learning correct English?

Next thing I'd like to ask you is: Can reading novels written by native speakers play an essential role in enhancing my English level? If yes, then can anyone of you please suggest me some names of the novels written by the native speakers?

Thank you.

""You have an appointment?" The receptionist spoke with the nasal, elided Chinese highness, and Mr Biswas detected hostility in her manner.
"Fish-face" he commented mentally.
The receptionist started.
