Rode/rode on

Could someone clarify the confusions below for me. Thanks.

1. The tourists rode on a trishaw around the town.

2. The tourists rode a trishaw around the town. (could this one means the tourists themselves do the cycling?)

Also,

What is the difference between.

1. The boy was drowned in the river.

2. The boy was drowned by the big waves. (Can this be: drowned in the big waves?)

3. The boy drowned in the river.

May i know what is the difference between drowned by and drowned in.

I'm also baffled by the difference between was drowned and drowned.

The boy was drowned in the river - somebody drowned him in the river. -- I have to disagree with this one. It could be that someone drowned him, but more likely it just states his condition.
