rites vs ritual

Could you kindly clarify which one fits the following contexts and the reason why the other one doesn't?

He died in the tragedy of Titanic and his body was not found. But the rites/ritual of funeral was conducted anyway.

Thanks

He died in the tragedy of Titanic and his body was not found. But the of funeral rite was conducted anyway. I prefer this because "ritual" is the prescribed procedure for a rite.

ritual of funeral was conducted. A "ritual" is an act. A "rite" are the words that may attend an act. The words that are said during the funeral would be the funeral "rite."
