rite of passage

Would you please tell me what "rite of passage" means?

Some of the few rites of passage that are still widely recognized occur within religious organizations.
And why there is no article before the "passage"?

Top answer

A "rite of passage" is the ritual of crossing a major boundary or transition in life, as defined by the community. "Passage" is the concept of going over that boundary. For example, some communities have celebrations when a boy becomes a man or a girl becomes a woman.
