Vocabulary

Risk / falling / prune

Hi teacehrs,

1. Do you think I would wear something like that to risk my profession?

>> In English usage can a dress risk your profession?

2. This dress is too big, it is falling / dropping / riding down.

>> I cannot find the word to describe this, can you help me?

3. Is "prune" a word to describe a dress that looks old on you? I heard the word said really fast but I cannot make it out if it is "prune".

Thank you.

1. Personally, I think the use of the infinitive "to risk" in the sentence isn't quite right. " This is called a serial verb which combines more than one event.

It seems to me that the sentence should read, "Do you think I would wear something like that and risk my profession?" This is called a serial verb which combines more than one event. For example, "He picked up the phone and said 'Hello.'"

This is not particularly idiomatic. I am more accustomed to hearing something like this:

Do you think I would risk losing my job by wearing something like that?

Hi CalifJim,

Thank you for helping me.

I phrased the sentence wrong in my post. I understand the dress code, it's not low cut neckline, or short skirt, and you would not lose your job even you wear it. If a lawyer wants to look smart and look more professional. Would you say "this dress would risk my profession if I wore this to see my client"?

Thanks again.

No. You simply can't combine "risk" with "profession".

Hi CalifJim,

Is it alright to say: "I don't want to risk looking unprofessional in this dress."?

Thank you.

This is fine. "risk" followed by the -ing form of a verb is a very idiomatic pattern to use. Good!
