Hello:Is "chickenshit" a correct synonim for "rigid"?I find it as such in the Thesaurus of Slang, by Lewin & Lewin, 1994:RIGID adj.2. chickenshit, crab, hardliner, by the book, stiff, tough, rough. SeePARTICULAR (also listed under PARTICULAR)but don't find it listed under similar meanings in other dictionaries, where I mostly find:chickenshit noun:1. Only in a very limited sense. It doesn't immediately come to mind as such, but I can see how it might fight a slangy or metaphorical use of "rigid" to describe a person who's (what's the word?) martinetish (yes, that's it).

But it wouldn't work for something like "that rigid beam holds the roof up".

I think it's not a synonym for "rigid," but the first two definitons you cite are fine. I think "chicken" is the synonym for cowardly, not "chickenshit," but some people probably use it for that. I've never heard it as a synonym for the noun, coward.

At least in the US, the word is used to characterize something as insignificant in itself, but bothersome nevertheless. Some minor bureaucratic problem might be characterized as "a *** requirement" one that is ineffectual in attaining the end it was designed for, irrelevant to your effort, but having to be satisfied nevertheless.
To that extent is can mean rigid, but that is a secondary part of the meaning. The primary one is "insignificant". The secondary one is "unavoidable" (which you've interpreted as "rigid").

"Chicken" and "chickenshit" also have a long history of U.S. military usage, though it's hard to say which came first, the chicken or the Army. Commonly as "How does a guy transfer out of this chicken outfit?"
There it often means that local command is strongly given to enforcing regulations for their own sake rather than out of any genuine need; there is no implication of cowardice, although a "chicken outfit" may be one that is vanishingly unlikely to see combat.
