I used to hear "right you are" for "okay" every so often, in ordinary BrE; but it seems to have faded away.

"How right you are!" (emphatic agreement) is still sometimes used, on the other hand; usually with an air of humour or irony.

Hi both,

It seems that 'how right you are' is the inversion of 'you are right'.

e.g. 'How beautiful you are' is the inversion of 'you are beautiful'.

Is 'how right you are' and 'right you are' pretty much mean the same thing?

I'm wondering why 'right you are' and 'you are right' don't mean the same?

Hi,

It seems that 'how right you are' is the inversion of 'you are right'. In language, things are not always what they seem. Just think of it as a fixed, idiomatic phrase. Anyway, it's not really in common use today.

Hi, Clive,

Very interesting.
I have to say I have never heard "Right you are" with that meaning!
To me it's just an enthusiastic, almost overbearing way of sayi

I agree with Jim - to me it has the same meaning as "you're right," but in a sort of wildly enthusiastic tone -- perhaps as part of a salesmans persuasive pitch.

Right you are!
Intriguing. It's distinctly non-hysterical and non-overbearing in BrE. Quite the opposite; it has something of a chummy air.

My Dad would always use 'Right you are' as a confirmation he understood a request in terms of his work (building contractor). i.e. customer or someone would explain what they needed/wanted and the affirmation was 'right you are' almost 'right you are guv.'

In that context its less about agreement - more about understand and an implicit confirmation you are the boss.
