This shows how tricky multiple-choice tests can be.  All seems possible at first glance, then narrowing things down, D and E seem to be the best choices.   But D seems like the best answer:  people don't want to confess their anxieties for fear off appearing weak.

You can start with People are afraid of appearing ---.

Appearing virtuous or prudent is certainly not cause for fear. That rules out A and E.
Appearing recondite is a rather implausible situation. The concept itself is strange.* That rules out B.
Appearing derelict or weak are the best candidates for the answer. (C or D.)

Now the question is whether appearing in these ways would cause people to be constrained (C) to confess (someone else is making them confess these anxieties) or reticent (D) to confess (they themselves don't want to confess these anxieties).

I think you can work out from this that D is the best answer.

*I don't even know how people can "appear recondite". Being recondite is usually the property of a concept or a field of study. recondite: difficult or impossible for one of ordinary understanding or knowledge to comprehend. A recondite subject. A recondite theory.
