I have thought it is that way. I understand what you trying to say, but.... what about the text I quoted? It is taken from the serious short story. Is it possible that the writer meant boxes put one next to the other, the every other in the upside down position? Or something like that?

When the robots removed the boxes from the truck, they replicated the exact same pattern in the warehouse.
