Right preposition

Is it on or for? I have seen sentences with both?

Let's go for a ride.
Let's go on a ride.

If both are right, what is the difference?

Thank you.

Thanks for your help.

But is ‘on’ wrong in this case?

You would say "Let's go on a ride" at a fair, if you wanted to go on a roller coaster or a ferris wheel.

I see. Thanks a lot. And when do you use the 'for a ride'?

If you want to drive around in your car -- especially if it's just for entertainment, to look at the scenery, etc., rather than driving because you have to get somewhere.
