Right or Wrong?

He was interested in entering politics in which regard his earlier attempts had been/were unsuccessful.

Are the above statements erroneous?

Although I prefer the above construct, the other way to reframe it would be:

Interested in entering politics, his earlier attempts in this regard had been/were unsuccessful.

Any new suggestions are also welcome.

Thank you.

I think your first statement does contain errors. Your reframing of the sentence makes it a lot better. Interested in entering politics, his earlier attempts in this regard were unsuccessful.

  • Interested in entering politics, his earlier attempts in this regard were unsuccessful.
  • I think adding 'even though' would make it a bit more good: Even though he is interested in entering politics, his earlier attempts in this regard were unsuccessful.

Thank you for your sincere efforts.

'Even though' does not work in this case owing to 'earlier'.

I believe the first sentence isn't erroneous, yet I would like some clarification and would appreciate a second opinion.

Hello mentee—and welcome to English Forums.

The main problem is that 'in this regard' is awkward and hyperformal, and it is not called for in your sentence at all. It does not even carry the right intent. Also. the use of 'even though' is unrelated to the use of 'earlier'. It should read:

He was interested in entering politics although/even though his earlier attempts

Prajwal's 'even though' appeared to be misplaced and hence the afterthought. Your explanation and example answer my question.

Thank you Mr Micawber.
