Vocabulary

riding shotgun with sb

I read somewhere that it means to drive in the front seat of a motor vehicle. I am translating a book in which this metaphore occurred. So I need to know why shotgun is used in this idiom. Do you happen to know?

On the stagecoaches of the old American West (at least according to the many western movies I have seen), a guard armed with a shotgun rode beside the driver.

Thank zou Mister Micawber. I knew there must be a reason.
