ride the bench, comfortable edge

Although she was a second-string athlete in high school, Naomi now rides the bench only after she has given her team a comfortable edge.

Can anyone explain the meaning of the above sentence in plain English?

Players who are not in the game sit on the bench. Naomi stays in the game until the team has a strong lead. Only then will her coach take her out of the game (put her on the bench).
