Riddle

Back in the year 1889, two locomotives are on the same track in Kansas. The first train begins Atchison Kansas, and heads southwest towards Topeka, Kansas, a distance of some 53.3 miles, and is travelling at 31.29 mph. A second freight train left Santa Fe, New Mexico the evening before. It is now 49.92723 miles from Topeka, and travelling at 29.31 mph. At 1:47 in the afternoon, on August 31, 1889, the two trains collide with a terrible crash, and the news of the wreck is all over the newspapers for the next nine days.

Which train was closer to New York City at the point of the collision?
