Rewriting in the present tense, again, FAO Clive

Hi there

Thanks for your approval of my "parts of speech" question.

Can you please help me to re-write the passage in the present tense: My response is below in bold font.

John told the following story a few days ago. Tell the story as Peter would tell it today:

Peter and I are going to explore in the mountains tomorrow. I shall call for Peter at ten o' clock in the morning and we shall take the bus to Newcastle. I am taking the eatables and Peter will supplu fruit and something to drink. We hope the weather will be fine and that we shall have an enjoyable time. We expect to be home in time for supper.

My response:

John and I are exploring in the mountains today. John called for me at ten o' clock this morning and, presently, we are taking the bus to Newcastle. I am taking the fruit and drink, and Peter is supplying the eatables. We are hoping that the weather stays fine and that we continue to have an enjoyable time. We expect to be home in time for supper.

I don't understand what you are trying to do. The original story speaks of one day into the future ('going to explore in the mountains tomorrow ') but you are asked to tell the story as it would be told today, which is ' a few days ' later. Therefore the events have passed and the story should naturally be told in the past tense.

  • I don't understand what you are trying to do.
  • The original story speaks of one day into the future ('going to explore in the mountains tomorrow ') but you are asked to tell the story as it would be told today, which is ' a few days ' later.
  • Therefore the events have passed and the story should naturally be told in the past tense.
  • -- are exploring (present) and called for me (past).
  • So whatever tense you should be using, you have not done so.
