Please help me rewrite the following sentence

Chinese leaders know perfectly well that China was invaded and exploited by foreign powers during the nineteenth century precisely because it failed to attain great-power status while Japan and the European states did. After all, China suffered hugely from Japanese imperialism when it was economically and militarily weak. To avoid another "Century of shame and humiliation", China would need to achieve great-power status.
