Reword this sentence to make it seem less awkward?

Context:

Roxy fears her child "could grow up and be sold down the river". At the end of the novel, "the creditors sold him down the river" (1056). By following the conventions of society, Tom becomes corrupted by wealth and luxury. He ends up facing the fate his mother tried to avoid.

Sentence:

"He ends up facing the fate his mother tried to avoid."

Is there a way to say this less awkwardly? Or would you say its good enough and its just me thinking its not good enough.

Another sentence:

Although he initially pretended to kill people in his games with Tom, Huck realizes the brutality of violence.

Thanks in advance!
