0I need help with revising..02br 02br 00thanks in advance. 02br 02br 00Reasons for Income Inequality02br 02br 00Have you ever hard the saying “ The Rich get richer while the poor get poorer”. In the United States the rich continue to earn more, while the poor stay at the bottom of the income ladder. Income inequality exists in America, due to low minim wage, racial and gender discrimination, education, and technological advancements.00 02br 02br 00The first reason for income inequality is the minimum wage law. The last time that America has had a minimum wage increase was September 1,1997 (DOL 1). The federal minimum wage increased by forty cents, bringing the minimum wage up to $5.15 per hour (DOL 1). Some states have their own minimum wage laws, for example California’s Minimum wage is $8.00 per hour, Wisconsin’s is $6.50 per hour and Alabama has no state minimum wage law (DOL 1). Raising the minimum wage is the fist step in narrowing income gaps. Aaron Steelman and John A Wienberg point out “ The nominal value of the minimum wage remained constant throughout much of the 1980s meaning that as prices rose its real value dropped. Because the minimum wage may be expected to raise the wages of low-paid workers, the decline in its real value could be responsible for the increased wage inequality” (4). As the cost of living goes up every year, the value of money decreases. Lawmakers should raise the minimum wage consistently to reduce income inequality. 02br 02br 00 00Race can also determine the income that an individual receives. There are large income gaps between Whites, Blacks, Asians and Hispanics. Based on the 2005 Current Population Survey (CPS), Black households had an average income of $30,858, Hispanics $35,967, White households00 00$50,784, and Asian households led with an income of $61,094 (qtd. in DeNavas-Walt, Proctor, Lee 2). People argue that the gap exists because Hispanic and Black lack education and they don’t value their education. Dr. Roderick Harrison observed that if you’re a minority, it would be beneficial to obtain an education, because there is a greater chance of getting a high paying salary (Qtd. in Coleman 1). Toni Coleman observes, that even with a bachelors degrees Hispanics and Blacks don’t earn as much as Asian and White households (1). Location, educational background and discrimination all play a part in the racial income gaps (Coleman 1)02br 02br 00 00Women are also affected by income inequality. They trail men when it comes to income. Laurent Belsie implies,“ While liberals and conservative debate causes and remedies, everyone admits the gap has narrowed but still exists”(1). The gender income gap appears to exist all across the United States, for instance there is a gap of $5,014 in Boston, a $6,011 gap in San Francisco, a $4,553 gap in Minneapolis and a $3,975 gap in Miami (Belsie 1). If a woman obtains a bachelors degree she would only make an average 61 cent for every dollar a man makes (Coleman 1). To illustrate the pay differences, the women of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) do not generate the same salary of the male players in the National Basketball Association (NBA). For the 2004-2005 basketball season, the minimum salary for woman with 0-3 years of WNBA experience is00 00$31,200 (WNBA 1). While on the other hand, the minimum salary of a male basketball player with zero years of NBA experience is 385,277 (NBA 1).02br 02br 00 00Technological Advancements have had an impact on the income disparity. Jobs that were conducted manually have been replace by computerized inventions. Before computer technology, bookkeepers had to record information manually (Yellen 3). The new technology forces the people in that field to learn computer skills. Some people fear new technology and do not want to learn how to use it. Which forces the workers to find new employment because their skills are obsolete (Yellen 3). Aaron Steelman and John Weinberg argue, “Technological innovations has significantly affected the wage distribution in the United States” (1). Skills differences result in unequal pay among workers.00 00There is a shortage of skilled workers, so companies are willing to pay top dollar for workers can operate new technology. Therefore feeding to the income inequality problem in America.02br 02br 00 00Education is the most important factor of income inequality.00 00Individuals who obtain a bachelors degree can nearly double their income, as oppose to settling for a high school diploma (Coleman 1). Toni Coleman reports, “Bachelors degree holders earned an average of $51,554 in 2004, compared to $28,645 earned by high school graduates and the $19,1161 earned by those without a high school diploma (Qtd. in Coleman 1). Over the past 30 years, income gaps between degree holders and high school graduates have gotten larger. There is large demand for individuals with a college degree but not enough supply (Yellen 2). Therefore a company is willing to pay a high salary. If the demand decreases, the companies are likely to reduce their starting salaries. College enrollment has increased, but has not been enough to reduce the pay disparity between college and high school graduates (Yellen 2). If the demand for educated workers decreases, then the gap between college and high school graduates may decrease.02br 02br 00SO what do you think?02br 02br 00I have yet to come up with a conclusion.. I always have a struggle with intro's and concllusions.. if you have any ideas on a good conclusions.. I would appriciate it. Thanks in advance. 0-
