Revising my opening paragraph

Hello,

I am having trouble revising my opening paragraph for my paper. I have went over and over it and I am still not sure what to do. Any help or recommendations are appreciated.

Opening Paragraph-

In the news today, NFL players are kneeling for the American Flag and the Star-Spangled Banner due to the injustice that minorities receive from police officers. The protest has sparked a controversy over whether it is right or not to kneel for the flag and national anthem. It is important to point out that everything we have built as a Nation in the past, we have done it motivated by our Flag. From the creation of our present society to the constitution of the government we now enjoy, the American Flag has always been the shelter of our actions that have marked the history of our America.

The paper is on why people should stand for the American Flag and national anthem. I am not sure what else I can do to sure up this paragraph but I know that it can get better.

Thank You,

Jeff

Your paper will be rather shallow if all you say is just that the flag is important. I suggest that you consider the principles that the flag represents, eg justice and equal treatment for everyone regardless of skin colour, freedom of speech. and so forth.
