The one I feed the most

It is a warm afternoon in July 2004, John, fourteen years old with curled red hair is trying to shrinking himself into the couch, as if to make him invisible to an unknown powerful enemy. He is in pain, and under depression. Tears welling out of his beautiful blue eyes, winding down along his pale cheeks. After the in vain struggle with the evil inside, he is desperate. He almost lost himself, and surrendered to the evil. He feels so hopeless and lonely. He has a lot of dreams; he can see how to proceed to realize the dreams. But with the evil inside dragging his feet, he is always wandering off the planned trail. He can see how close the future is. It is almost there, but he can’t move any further to reach. He is at the moment to yield and hand over the control of his own body to that evil, to indulge himself into the pleasure of sensation.

Suddenly, without his notice, a warm palm landing on his right shoulder, and pulls him against a broad and warm chest. “Dad!” his voice trails off as he buries his face against his father’s warm chest.

Father says nothing but rocking both of them gently side to side. The world begin to be governed by light and transparent peaceful silence. Then suddenly the sounds from outside flood into the room, as if an invisible dam suddenly disappears in no time. The horning of vehicles, bird’s chirpings are echoing in the room. Even John can be clearly hear Matt’s childish begging: “Mom, give me a quarter, please!”

John’s heart begins to melt into this delightful air. His legs, and arms relax and extend. Unconsciously, his mind is drifting along with his father’s slow and peaceful voice, ‘ …, A native American elder once described his own inner struggles in this manner: "Inside of me there are two dogs. One of the dogs is mean and evil. The other dog is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time." When asked which dog wins, he reflected for a moment and replied, "The one I feed the most.” …'
