Video game have become quite popular over the years. Thanks to games like Grand theft Auto, and Resident Evil, but the same games have also brought controversy. Games like Grand theft Auto are no longer simple they are much like interactive movies now. Which means video games have become much like movies as far as graphics, and the long convoluted story lines go. Just like movies have a rating system to prevent young kinds from watching movies they're too young for, game have their own rating system as well. The ESRB, is a tool design mainly for parents, to give them information about specific games which includes the level of violence, profanity, nudity, and sexual content. The ESRB also incorporates age restriction into their different ratings for individual games. For example rated M games are for a mature audience only, which means the minimum age requirement to purchase a M rated game is 17 years old. Of course all of these restrictions mean nothing if the parents are not informed. Therefore parents should take more responsibility when their own children play adult video games.
For example if a kid can not purchase the game on his own then the kid will simply ask the parent, and if the parent is ignorant about the rating system then the parent will be purchase a M rated game for a 10 year old. Which means that parents are the main reason why kids are playing rated M games when they should not. Parents need to have a greater sense of responsibility when it come to purchasing video games for their kids. In reality parent are the ones with the income which means they are the ones in control. Parents need to be better informed about the different types of games their kids play or want to play. If parents are better informed then maybe parents can stop their kids from playing or buying rated M video games.
Kids as young as 10 should not be expose to violence that is intended for more mature audiences, and is not only the violence also the profanity, and sexual content. Recently it seem that parents are focusing in putting the blame on video game developers and the gaming industry as well as the media. For example take the PTC the parents television council, which is made out of parents. The PTC is a group of mostly conservative parents who think everything in TV is evil, and put all blame on the the media, retail stores, and video games. Of course is not only the PTC but also individuals for example Linda Pieperbrink an editor at the Maranatha Baptist Bible College, which publishes a magazine for Christian teenagers. She had this to say in one of her articles “video games with graphic, violent content teach young players that violence is acceptable in society”.(Pieperbrink). People just like Pieperbrink are digressing from the real problem instead they tend to focus on a variety of things but never the parents. For the most part groups and advocates are conservative which can also mean close minded, and with that kind of mind set nothing will be accomplished.
Which is why there is still no clear solution to the problem. The fact is that parents are just not as involved with their kids, or have the knowledge. There are too many things going on at the same time parents just don't keep up with the technology any more.
