Review on the tenses ! 2-Present Continuous

Question

Firstly, I'm sorry to post subject in the wrong place. Secondly, Hi everybody ! since a few minutes I've finished studying of all tenses and I've written some sentences and i need performance evaluation below each tense you will find the sentences. I know that there are many mistakes into them. So, please focus in explain the reason for the amendment in each tense, because i want to understand my mistake and don't repeat it.

1-she is not working now, she is swimming in the sea ---------------------
2-why is mary not wearing her new dress ---------------------
3- it is rainning ---------------------
4- she is practising the violin ---------------------
5- what are you reading now ---------------------
6- the sun is shining and the birds is singing ---------------------
7- the fireman is coming down again ---------------------
8- he is carrying a baby ---------------------
9- you can't see Sam now, he is having a bath ---------------------
10- i won't go out as it is rainning and i am not having an umbrella ---------------------
11- the kettle is boiling now. shall i make tea ? ---------------------

We are happy to help you, but please post questions using your best English. Many of our posters are a bit lazy and do not use the "Shift Key."
Then they expect the teachers to make corrections. We always use the Shift Key and proper punctuation.

1-She is not working now; she is swimming in the sea. -- All sentences begin with a capital letter, and end with a period or question mark.
Sentences not ending in these marks must be joined by a conjunction or semicolon.

2-Why is Mary not wearing her new dress? --Incorrect punctuation, a question sentence must end in a question mark. Proper nouns must be capitalized.

Please make corrections in punctuation, and re-post your sentences.

However, I'll write all sentences again.

1-She is not working now; she is swimming in the sea.

3- It is raining.
4- She is practising the violin.
5- What are you reading now ?
6- The sun is shining and the birds is singing.
7- The fireman is coming down again.
8- He is carrying a baby.
9- You can't see Sam now, he is having a bath.
10- I won't go out as it is rainning and i am not having an umbrella.

(I am not having an umbrella. - Probably, it could be correct upon certain conditions but it is not a standard "tensing")

Can you explain me what is these the conditions ?
I wrote these sentences in Present Continuous and you know that it contains: infinitive + ing.
But, you wrote: I don't have an umbrella.
Why you wrote that ? and on what basis ? Just i need understand.

9- You can't see Sam now; he is having (In American English, we say "taking a bath." You are using the British English expression) a bath.
10- I won't go out as it is raining and I ~~am not having~~ do not have an umbrella.
11- The kettle is boiling now; shall I make tea?

This is because there are some verbs which are usually not used in PRESENT CONTINUOUS. (Sometimes they can be used but this is something you could learn after you have learnt the regular rule.)

These verbs are usually not used in CONTINUOUS

see, hear, prefer, understand, know, hate, belong, realize, want, need, loathe and others.

You need to read some grammar books this is not a difficult issue you will find a proper explanation in the pages of English Grammar Books.

We use continuous tenses to show continuation (duration) of an activity.

I am having dinner now. (I am eating now. I started a few minutes ago, and I will finish soon.)

But some verbs do not express duration of an activity. The progressive is not used with these meanings.
I have an umbrella in the car just in case of rain. (There is no duration of the activity. It is a simple statement of fact.)

Well, you might be confused now as you might wonder - why is it ok to say

I am having dinner now. - (HAVING)

and it is not ok to say
I am having an umbrella.

This is because the verbs can have more than one meaning

For example, - HAVE
1) if it means to possess then it is not used with - ING.

2) if it means - to spend time - then it can be used with ING

Like,
I am having a good time. (It doesn't mean that I possess the time, it means that I am spending it the way I like it)

Another example - SEE

1) If it means to see (the action of your eye and brain) then it is almost always used without ING
Who do you see now?
2) But it can also mean to meet
Then you can say
I am seeing my friend tomorrow. (It means that you have an appointment with him)

Not usually, but sometimes we do use the continuous to show duration of a state or attitude:

I will be seeing him next week.
I have been wanting to visit Moscow for a long time.
He is understanding / is hearing her better since he got his hearing aid.
She was slowly realizing that she had been mistaken.
