"Study of immune modulation mechanisms by parasites is becoming an integrative topic with a number of cross-links to other areas of research. It has been significantly helpful in giving insights into other fields like evolutionary ecology and immune pathology.
Knowledge of immune modulation intricacies combined with the prolonged research into the underlying mechanisms of autoimmune diseases has directed the studies towards focusing on what is generally termed the "Helminthic Therapy".
The high incidence of autoimmune disorders, especially in the industrialized world gave significance to the question of whether induced helminthic infections can be applied as a treatment solution to autoimmunity-induced diseases. This question has been the core of many recent studies. Several years of research in this particular area included experimental studies on the efficacy and safety of TSO treatment; treatment of autoimmune disease using https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichuris_suis ova. The research investigated the possibilities of treatment and prevention of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease) using TSO. Initial open-label studies showed a high percentage of efficacy and response to treatment amongst participants. However, despite the already established research framework in this area, many questions are still arising and there are current investigations on several relevant aspects like the safety of this treatment in immunosuppressed patients."
