Scholarship Write-Up
Growing up as a child, I have always been voracious in the consumption of knowledge in order to receive a first class education and ultimately be the best in everything I do. For the entirety of my secondary school years, I have been ranked either 1
st or 2
nd in the entire school cohort. Having displayed my exemplary academic abilities, I was the candidate of choice on many occasions to represent the school in national competitions which include: Senoko Climate Change Challenge 2012, Temasek Polytechnic Fuel Cell Challenge 2011 and Singapore Polytechnic Spelling Bee Competition 2011. Most notably, I have clinched the merit award at the Victoria Junior College Forensic Science Challenge in 2011 which bears testimony to my flair and drive towards the sciences. For the past four years, I have without fail, received the Edusave Scholarships offered by MOE for being in the top 10% of the entire student population.
In addition to my academic achievements, I have also performed consistently well to be placed in my school’s softball team and represent the school in both national and zonal softball tournaments. I have proven myself to be both a capable and devoted sportsman. Developing both body and mind is key to academic success. Furthermore, I was a respectable peer leader in the school, having undergone intensive selection interviews and grooming to attain the role of a Student Councillor. Held in high regard by both teachers and peers, I was involved in planning major school events such as the Student Council Investiture 2011 which was highly successful. To see things through properly and perfectly is my motto. Owing to my grandiloquence, I have on two occasions given speeches to the school for the Speak Good English Movement. With English being the primary medium for communication between the different races in Singapore, I adamantly subscribe to the notion that we must all speak good English in order to prevent misunderstandings. How awkward it would be if when called upon to speak in public, you are unable to deliver your message concisely and clearly?
In stalwart accordance to the school’s value of compassion, I have volunteered to partake in the school’s Heartsprings Chinese New Year Block held at Merpati Road to reach out to those plagued by destitution. As I went around offering mandarin oranges, they accepted them with such infectious glee that I felt their happiness in my heart. This warmth in my heart constitutes my motivation to excel and give back to society. I want to be on the giving and not receiving end.
While participating in the Singapore Polytechnic Spelling Bee Competition 2011, the scientific terms that I had come across were clearly out of syllabus. That was perhaps when I realized my own inadequacy in science. It was truly an eye-opening experience as it made me reaffirm my resolve to delve deeper into science.
Even with my rudimentary understanding of science, Albert Einstein’s work in general and special relativity has never failed to impress me. In the face of numerous oppositions and fulminations from many renowned scientists, Einstein’s theories have not faltered. Recalling the recent incident whereby the OPERA experiment reported neutrinos appearing to travel faster than light which violated Einstein’s Special Relativity. Shortly after, physicists dismissed this report as anomalous and Einstein was once again proven right. His genius has formulated theories that –after many decades—still stands in the present. It doesn’t take a scientist or academic to marvel at the simplicity of Einstein’s revolutionary “E=MC2” equation. What on the surface looks straightforward has had far-reaching implications on the scientific community and the theories that have arisen since Einstein’s time. Einstein, to me, is what every aspiring scientist should become. He is without a doubt, my role model.
Ever since taking up the science subject in school, I have been immensely enraptured by the wonders of Science. To be perfectly honest, my determination was first ignited when I first learned that I had to perform well in order to take up the “Triple Sciences Course” in secondary school. After, I became obsessed with my studies, spending almost every waking moment poring over my textbooks and notes. Before I knew it, my academics had become a significant part of my life. I began jumping onto every opportunity in school to challenge my intellectual capacity in hopes of improving my knowledge bank. If offered the chance, I will be unhesitant to exert my utmost and stand out among the many other students. Since my primary school years when I was still ignorant and carefree, my mindset towards studying has been greatly altered for the better. My grades have improved by leaps and bounds: from an unimpressive PSLE aggregate of 199 to a staggering raw L1R5 of 6 – making me qualify for Victoria Junior College despite my background in a neighborhood school. Presently, I will do absolutely anything in order to further my education and satiate my gnawing thirst for knowledge. I believe my potential for growth is great – all that is left is the opportunity to fulfill my potential.
Singapore, as we know, has been intensively developing its research and development sector so as to compete with the likes of exponentially larger countries like the United States or China. My dream is to be a part and at the forefront of Singapore’s research industry. To me, Singapore’s prosperity and security hinges on the work done by the many brilliant Singaporean scientists which has paved the way for the country’s unbridled growth. To work with and stand among these scientists would be my life’s goal. To attain my dream, a scholarship will definitely prove to be of great use in the treacherous path that is my education. I envision myself studying in a prestigious university overseas and working towards a PhD in Physics or Chemistry while in the process of immersing myself in another culture. The journey I chose to take will be demanding but, I have chosen to devote my life to better myself and to improving civilization as a whole. For the rest of my life, I hope to continue in this same manner of unselfish work in helping others and advancing mine and society’s level of understanding towards the sciences just as other great scientists who have come before me.
