Question:

Some people think that a person can never understand the culture of a country unless they speak the language.

Do you agree with this opinion?

Essay:

Understanding the culture of other people make people close to each other as well as facilitates communication among them. Some people claim that a person can never understand the culture of a country unless speak their languages. I partially agree. To be truly able to understand other cultures well, you may need to understand and speak their language.

On one hand, It is true that there are a lot of translated cultural resources that people can read and use to know about other cultures and to go deeply into understanding their traditions. Especially in our time that is full of advanced technologies which make opening and connecting to the world and other cultures much easier. Reading translated books, watching movies, documentaries, and using translation software can help a lot in communication and understanding other's cultures.

On the other hand, depending only on translated resources such as documentaries, as example, may not give an accurate and completed picture of other's cultures all the time. Moreover, most of the times, communication through translation software gives a literal translation which affects the meaning of sentences so that produce misunderstanding. Therefore, It is not always a good choice especially for people who do not have any basics of the foreign language they want to use.

Speaking other peoples' languages make a person able to communicate directly to them and understanding their culture from their own words without needing to have a medium such as a translator. Communication directly can help a person make his own views about other cultures independently without needing others to report it to them.

In conclusion, although we can know and understand other peoples' cultures through reading translated resources and using verity of technological software but speaking their languages still make a person closer and help to deeply understand their culture as well as making his own views based on that direct communication.
