Could someone review my first attempt of motivation letter for a master`s degree? Thank you!
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in applying fo a Master's Degree Program in Geology-Geoscience at the University of Copenhagen for the 2012 Spring term.
I graduated in July 2009 from the University of Latvia and received a bachelor degree in geology. The reason I decided to study geology is that I come from a part of Latvia which is located in Gauja National Park where large devonian rock outcrops – sandstone precipices, rocks and caves are common things. All these geological formations drew my attention and I decided to study geology. During my bachelor studies I wrote course thesis on geological objects in vicinity of my hometown - Sigulda. During that time I stumbled upon carbonate inclusions - caIcretes, which affected my choice of writing my bachelor thesis on carbonate inclusions in deposits of Devonian Katlesi Formation in vicinity of Kuprava. I enjoyed every bit of field, laboratory and theoretical work I had during my studies. I am very interested in this program and particularly in sedimentary basin specialization track, since sedimentology has been my main interest.
I have shortly worked as an assistant geologist for two companies – one of which was mainly in land survey and engineering geology sector and I gained a little experience in drawing geological cuts with software Microstation and writing geological reports. Second one was a small private company which mainly concentrated on exploration of sand and gravel resources with occasional projects related to engineering geology. Drilling with hand drill for geological exploration of sand and gravel was my main responsibility at this workplace.
At the time I was studying, I decided that I want to continue my studies and apply for master’s degree in my home country. Sadly I had to cancel my plans due to personal and financial reasons. Two years ago I worked in Great Britain for seven months and last year I spent four months in Danish “Folk high school”. I found it surprising how free I can feel in international environment and how easily I can adapt in different social groups and keep open mind about it. That and desire to deepen my knowledge drove to decision that I should continue my studies abroad.
University of Copenhagen is the largest institution of research and education in Denmark and stands pretty high between Europe and world universities. After reading the content of the programme I believe a Master Degree Program in geology at University of Copenhagen would offer me the possibility of receiving great depth of knowledge and education that is recognized by employers.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you
Yours Sincerely,
