Review Motivation letter

Respected members, I am not very good at writing essay & letters so I need you to review my motivation letter & share expert advice to improve it. Thanking you all in advance

I am applying for the M.Sc. Textile & clothing technology at ------------, starting in September 2013. My ambition is to become a distinguished researcher & technical textile technologist.
After completing my Textile engineering in 2010 with distinction from ----------------------, which is the premier Textile Institute of Pakistan, I joined a leading Textile mill to augment my knowledge with practical experience. I now feel confident enough to step forward in my professional career & gain advance knowledge in Technical textiles & Textile machinery that suits my career goals. I intend to capitalize my professional experience & advance knowledge gained from this course for research & innovation in Mobil-Textiles, Medical-Textiles, Geo-Textiles & Textile machinery modification. The culmination of my journey would be in bolstering indigenous development of technical textile & make a real contribution to the economy & infrastructure in Pakistan.
Textile Industry is the mainstay of Pakistan's economy that accounts for 66% of exports, 45% of employment, 46 % of manufacturing & a contribution of 8.6% in GDP. Typical product mix of this industry is limited to only conventional products. Currently it is grappling with massive ills & plummeting exports (about 10.38% reduction in last 11 months). Marred by the industry-academia gap & dearth of research culture, it has reached saturation in terms of innovation & value addition implying thin margins, low product differentiation. It is in dire need of innovative inputs of advance machinery, process optimization & product diversification to survive in the ever competitive business scenario.

A major impediment to growth of Textile industry of Pakistan is its reluctance to step in the knowledge based textiles that now account for ¼ of world textile consumption by weight & 20% by Value. High-tech textiles offer far positive growth outlook than traditional textiles (about 5% annually). Indigenous development of these materials in Pakistan is stymied by scarce exposure & expertise in technical textiles development & standardization, lack of research & technical facilities, scant importance towards cost & life cycle benefits over traditional products and little emphasis on health, safety & environmental aspects. Among the pervasive & indispensable high-tech textiles, Agro-textiles, medical textiles, & Geo-textiles are some of the target areas that offer huge growth potential & applications in Pakistan but lack of local manufacturing makes their import inescapable, thus inflicting burden on the economy. In case of medical textiles only, Pakistan spends about $70m annually in importing such products.

After doing extensive research in Geo Textiles, Medical textiles, smart textiles Textile machinery modification, I will work for developing such Technical textiles that are feasible with little or without any modification on existing setups & machinery. These products may be on the lower end of the technology but the impact & psychological change produced will be massive. It will be a convincing epitome for the hesitant industry to take the technological shift from conventional textiles to knowledge based textiles. In the later stage I will work with the industry for incremental capacity building and preparing for more demanding products as well as diversification of typical product mix of textile industry. Indigenous development will not only provide great opportunities for obviating expensive imports, encouraging export but also capitalize on the Asian market that is the largest consumer of technical textiles & offers the highest growth rate of 6.5% p.a. Besides promoting development of technical textiles in large textile industries, I will work in collaboration with government to establish Small & medium enterprises (SMEs) producing technical textiles, & research centers that will focus on the technical textile solutions with practical application in Pakistan and provide a platform for innovation to the young engineers in Pakistan.

Materialization of my career goals is highly dependent on sound knowledge in Technical textiles & Textile machinery. After thorough contemplation, I have found M.Sc. in Textile & clothing technology at ------------- to be perfectly aligned with my goals. The prime advantage of this course is its research based approach, diverse course contents that combine Textiles, Mechanical Engineering & machine design augmented by comprehensive & future oriented training in Technical textiles. Modules of textile materials, Processes & machines of Textiles & Ready-made clothing technology & knowledge of scientific methodic approach will hone me for pursuing research & innovation in Technical textiles and utilizing it for indigenous development of technical textiles in Pakistan. Modules of Technical mechanics, machine design & mechanisms, processes & machines of Textiles & Ready-made clothing technology will enable me to fully comprehend the design, elements, mechanisms & functioning of the gamut of textile machinery & processes that will be extremely helpful for the feasible production of technical textile on existing textile setups in Pakistan and the carry out required machine modifications. The latest research & priority oriented knowledge imparted in the specialization modules will make me knowledgeable about the state of the art methods, machines, & techniques in Textile, clothing technology, process & product optimization & Technical textile development.

Another highly covetable advantage is the opportunity to work at the ----------------- that has been the fount of research & engineered innovation in machine construction & Technical Textiles development & offers state of the art facilities for manufacturing & testing, and CAD/CAE facilities. Exposure to------- will allow me to muster matchless skills & expertise pertinent to my career goals especially in machine modification & technical textile development. In addition, the interdisciplinary research atmosphere at ----------- & opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds that promotes cross-fertilization of ideas will be a highly conducive environment for my studies.

My engineering studies consisted of rigorous & exhaustive courses such as Textile materials, spinning technology, weaving technology, Textile chemistry, Textile testing & quality control, ready-made clothing technology & Textile machines. My keen interest in textiles motivated me to fully comprehend fundamentals of the subjects, & ace my engineering with a University Medal of honor and several scholarships. My lifelong interest in technical textiles was sparked the very first time I attended a lecture on the ingenious applications of textiles in Aerospace & automotive industry. To satiate my growing inquisitiveness, I chose to do a research project to analyze the effects of interlacement pattern in woven reinforcements for Technical textiles & composite materials. I prepared glass fiber woven reinforcement fabrics in variety of interlacement patterns in single-ply, Multi-ply (open & tubular constructions) & compared their mechanical properties.

This research project was seminal in the developing my career goals. It also proved to be highly rewarding & effective learning experience as I learnt to carry out basic research, gained first-hand experience of technical textiles, their potential & applications in Pakistan as well as the true picture of the factors thwarting their indigenous development. The dearth of technical resources that I faced beefed up my ambition to bring the knowledge & expertise of technical textiles to Pakistan. A major hurdle that turned into stimulus was the scarce weaving facilities for technical fabrics that in Pakistan are only limited to Defense institutions. In the absence of other alternatives I took up the challenge and contrived a basic weaving machine that I used to weave reinforcement structures for my research. This experience instilled an avid interest for development & modification of textile machinery that later transformed into my professional goal. It was also during this period when I learned that various technical textiles can be produced on the conventional machinery with little modification. But the local textile manufacturing industry about 80% of which consists of small workshop is unable to work out this feasibility as it lacks engineering base & works on the principle of reverse engineering.
Emboldened by this exhilarating experience, I underwent training of "Design & Analysis of composite materials" at National Institute of Design & Analysis (NIDA), Pakistan and learnt invaluable skills in conception, design & development in Textile composite materials that I used to develop GFRP laminates for corrosion resistant applications. To make myself acquainted with CAE in development of technical textiles, I received training in "Applications of Finite Element Analysis" at NIDA, through which I learnt to perform FEA analysis and modeling of textile reinforcements & composite materials.

Owing to my strong base in textiles & soft skills I was offered a job in ------------ textiles that provided me with praxis of various processes in textile product chain right from product conception to the finished product. After receiving trainings in pertinent departments I was appointed as an Assistant Weaving Manager to manage weaving production & maintenance operations. Leading a team of 30 people I have to ensure defect free weaving & optimum operation of weaving machines to avoid any production breakdown. Another aspect of my job is to coordinate with other departments on technical issues & working for process optimization in our product chain.

Besides acquiring technical skills & knowledge during my studies & job, it was a period of self-reflection & I discovered my strengths & weaknesses through the challenges I met. My ingenuity & ability to stand out from the crowd was the impetus for my interdisciplinary research. My self-starter nature allowed me to take initiative & build myself a weaving machine to complete my project. During training period at the job I learnt to balance between my self-starter nature & being an effective team member. Due to my commitment & hard work I got promoted to Assistant Weaving manager in just 6 months & now my strong interpersonal skills are proving extremely helpful to lead my team & successfully carry out my duties. In my personal life I feel responsible to adopt, share & disseminate good practices. Above all my indomitable strengths of conscience, humility & compassion bring satisfaction in my life. I may not be the best nor do I want to be, all I strive for is to be best of myself.

My passion to go for higher studies in a country that is a world leader in technology & innovation is premised on multitude of benefits that I learnt through research & discussions with some Alumni of ----------Universities. The most attractive feature for me is the fact that ------------universities are not the just venues for graduate & postgraduate studies rather serve as centers for confluence of teaching & research. Moreover they combine theoretical work with its practical application. Interdisciplinary research environment, integration of latest research in the curriculum, cutting edge technical facilities strong industry-academia linkage & the intellectual freedom make ----------- a top choice for my higher education & research as compared to higher education system in Pakistan that lacks Industry-academia ties & undeveloped technical facilities. Other shortcomings of the system that I also experienced during my research include the unwelcoming attitude towards interdisciplinary research, red tapes in the use of technical facilities, & near zero tolerance of the seniors for dissent that are tantamount to the discouragement of research, particularly the interdisciplinary research efforts.

Another cogent reason that makes me enthusiastic about getting advance knowledge of Technical textiles in ----------------- is the thriving technical textile industry of --------------- that has proliferated by 40% especially the nonwovens that have grown by 67% since 1990. Today it wields largest share (45%) in world market of technical textiles & this success can be attributed to its close association with textile research institutes & integrating various industrial sectors for complex product solutions. Studying this success story & exposure to the ------------companies that have shifted from conventional to knowledge based textiles will be a highly relevant model for Pakistan & my goals to bring the same shift in the Textile industry of Pakistan. I also have a strong desire to visit Borgers group & Freudenberg group to learn more about their innovative technical textile products especially for the automotive sector.

I am applying for DAAD Scholarship in the first place due to my current financial circumstances but due to crucial importance of this programme for my career I will manage for the financial sources even without scholarship. Hi,

It's much, much too long. That's also why no-one here wants to spend their time on it.

You need to say clearly and directly why you want to do this degree. Talk about yourself. For example, look at your second and third paragraphs. They say absolutely nothing about you.
