The diagram illustrates the circulation of specimens of big fish known as salmon.


Overall, this process is outlined in three consecutive stages, beginning with the small fishes at the lower river and ending with the eggs laid by adult salmon at the upper river.


Initially, the first stage of a salmon commences with the small fish labeled “fry”, having the length approximately from three to eight centimeters. In this stage, the “fry” spend around four years at the fast-flowing lower river, before entering the next stage of their rearing. In the subsequent stage, the fishes are identified as “smolt”, which are bigger than the previous one, with the length of 12-15 cm. These “smolt” living in the open sea during the period of roughly five years.


Afterwards, the smolts experience an increase in size and are considered as “adult salmon”. These salmon swim back towards the upstream where water flows slowly and spend about 5-6 months there. In this stage, the grown salmon conduct their egg-laying period, with the eggs lying next to small stones and under the reeds. Once the third stage finishes, the life cycle of the salmon begins anew.
