"revert"

Let's say I email a question to a colleague at work, and she'll have to do some research before giving a full response, and thus ends the quick reply with:
"I will revert back to you"

Neither of us is a native English speaker, but the above looks like an improper use of the word "revert" to me. I would have written something like "I'll get back to you".

Could a bona fide English speaker please tell me if "revert" can be used in the way described?

You're right, it can't. Revert means to return to its original state. For example, according to legend, for certain people, the light of a full moon can change the person into a werewolf.

  • When the morning comes, the werewolf REVERTS to being a normal person again.
  • A strange example I know, but it's what first came to my mind in relation to REVERT.

You are correct in both cases, "revert" is used incorrectly and the proper response is "I'll get back to you."
