Reverse italicization - inverted punctuation

Are the sentences below correct? I've seen this in print. If so, why would somebody do this, and what is the purpose? Is this called "reverse italicization"?

Yes, I see it sometimes. I may even have done it; I certainly do informally, on forum threads. Done judiciously, it makes the text clearer sometimes.
