Reverberate

Hi,

Laughter reverberated through/throughout/around the building.

Are all three acceptable?

Thanks.

anonymous Are all three acceptable? It depends on what you mean. If you mean that the laughter was audible in the entire interior of the building, all three are in the ballpark, but "throughout" is best.

  • "Through" would be better used of a crowd than of a building.
  • "Around" makes me think of the outside of the building for an instant, which is bad.
