Revenge is a dish best serve cold

Hi

In the sentence "Revenge is a dish best served cold", why is "cold" used here? I think an adverb should be replaced.

As a native English speaker, I can assure you that is the correct expression. "Cold" here is an adjective describing the dish, not an adverb describing the action of serving. I am guessing you think the expression should read: "Revenge is a dish best served coldLY"?

  • That would have quite a different meaning, because even a hot dish can be served coldly.
  • If the waitress brings your meal, and she is silent and unsmiling, you might say she served it coldly.
