The three pie charts compare the consumption of three nutrients (sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar), which is not good for people’s overall health if being overconsumed, in four meals of the day in the USA.
Overall, while a vast majority of sodium and saturated fat are used in dinner, added sugar presents represent the highest share in snacks.
The highest ratio of sodium is consumed in dinner (43 percent). And, the second place belongs to lunch with more than a quarter of total sodium eaten (29 percent). The same distribution is true for saturated fat in which 37 percent of that is absorbed from dinner and 26 percent from lunch. There is a slight difference in the allocation of these two nutrients in the other two meals. Whereas the share of sodium from breakfast and lunch ties at 14 percent, the percentage of saturated fat from lunch is 5 points higher than that from breakfast (21 percent compared to 16 percent).
The proportion of added sugar distributed among different meals is different from the other two substances. The lion’s share of added sugar is held by snacks (42 percent), almost 20 percent higher than that is consumed in dinner (23 percent). Next, added sugar for lunch makes up for nearly one-fifth of the total. Similar to sodium and saturated fat, breakfast only contains a minority of the total added sugar (16 percent).
