Retractable leash

Hi,

"When you have a retractable leash, you have to pull it in to get it to recoil back into the ......"

I'm not sure what to call the inside of the retractable leash. I don't even know if the word 'recoil' works in this case.

Could I also say that I have to 'wind it up' instead of 'pull it in'?

Thank you.

I suggest this. When you have a retractable leash, you have to pull it in a little manually to get it to retract automatically into the case.
