Retrace one’s steps

Hi,

Could I use ‘retrace one’s steps’ in a figurative sense?

“Our maths teacher was solving a difficult equation. When she got to the last part, she realized that she must have made a mistake, so she retraced her steps and tried to find it.”

She went back to the beginning of the equation to see what she missed.

Thank you.
