Hi. Let's say a person is trying to retell a short folk tale that he just saw on video to a group of young English learners in simple sentences. Are these sentences correct? Let's also say the tale has one main character and it is basically about him. Thank you for your help in advance.
He is an old man. He has a big family. He was rich but became poor later.

There once was an old man, who had a very large family, with many children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He was once rich but had become poor. Now, this man...etc.
1. This is a folk tale about an old man who was rich but (and?) became poor later. 2. This is a folk tale about an old man who had been rich but (and?) became poor later.
