Retaliation, requital, retribution, revenge

Hello.

Could you please help me see the difference between these words.

I can't figure it out on my own.

They are all synonyms, but each word has a preferred definition when you check the dictionary. Retaliation = make an attack or assault in return for a similar attack Requital = make appropriate return for a favor or service Retribution = punishment that is considered to be morally right and fully deserved Revenge = the action of inflicting hurt or harm on someone for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands I've noticed that several of your posts indicate that you might wish to consider reading the first few pages of your dictionary. This is where you'll find the "users manual" for the entire book and most people don't even know it's there and even fewer bother to take the time to read it.
