Retain Vs maintain

So I checked these two in my dear dictionary and they seem to be somehow the same;could be used interchangeably, if you will. Any objection? Emotion: smile Would you provide a few examples.
My thanks

The two words are not normally used interchangeably. However there could possibly be some exceptions to this. India expects to maintain/retain border protection (at a very high level).

  • In my opinion, both are possible in the sentence above with little (if any) difference in meaning.
  • I wonder if native speakers would agree with me.
