Retain Vs attain

So I checked these two in my dear dictionary and they seem to be somehow the same;could be used interchangeably, if you will. Any objection? Emotion: smile Would you provide a few examples.

I can't believe how clumsy I could be at times! My actual question was the difference between Retain and Maintain.
