Are these 2 series of sentences naturally written?

In these difficult times she has managed to retain keep her pride. She doesn't have any money but when asked if she needs something she says she doesn't need anything.

She has pride in these difficult times she's going through. She doesn't have any money but when asked if she needs something she says she doesn't need anything.

retain and keep her pride are redundant in that sentence - choose one. You need a comma in that second sentence; place it before the "but." The third sentence sounds weird... The fourth sentence is the same as the second.
