Respective/respectively??

This is tricky for me!!

Each device is connected to one channel via a respective duct.

Is this correct? What does it mean?

I´d like to express that each device (there is plurality of devices) has a separate duct with which it is connected to one channel, I´d like to avoid a possible interpretation of each device being connected through the same duct (all of the devices) to the channel. Is my formulation correct?

Thanks in advance,

BB

Your sentence is almost correct, but not specific enough. " However if you don't mind me asking, do all these devices connect to the same channel, but through their own respective ducts?

Your sentence is almost correct, but not specific enough.

I think it would be clearer if you changed one word: "Each device is connected to one channel via its respective duct."

However if you don't mind me asking, do all these devices connect to the same channel, but through their own respective ducts?

Thanks for your reply!

If I still like to use the indefinite article for 'a duct', is there any other way of expressing this?

And yes, you have understood it correctly, all devices connect to the same channel but via their own ducts.

what about :

Each device is connected to one channel via a separate duct.

Does the meaning change?

Technically upon close inspection 'via a separate duct' is not wrong, but it is not easy to fully understand at first glance, at least in my opinion. I would still go with 'its respective'. I think if you want to use 'via a separate duct', you would need to change the sentence to 'The devices are connected to one channel via separate ducts'.

AnonymousEach device is connected to one channel via a respective duct.
Each device is connected to a united channel via its own duct.

My choice. In your one the channel can be interpreted as a big, composite connecter where smaller ducts can be connected. Is that what you're saying?

United
