respectfully irreverent

Haven't visited this forum for a long time and fortunately I can still log in.

There was an eight minute show by London In the Beijing 2008 paralympics closing ceremony. A move by "Lord Nelson" was described as "respectfully irrevent". Can someone please enlighten me what is meant by "respectfully irrevent"? By the way, who is "Lord Nelson"? He is supposed to be someone well known (by British?).

Do you mean 'respectfully irreverent ' (cheeky/ derisive) or 'respectfully irrelevant ' (unrelated/ unimportant)? Apparently someone was dressed as Lord Nelson on a column. Yes, is a very well-known historical figure - for us British!

Sorry for the typo. It should be "respectfully irreverent". I know the meaning of both words but can't understand what this deliberate contradictory combination is about.

I just edited the title to correct the typo.

Maybe respectfully showing disrespect means that there was humour in the way Lord Nelson was portrayed, but without ridicule; it was funny, but didn't make fun of him.
(I'm guessing here as I didn't see the incident, only read about it!)
