Here's my thoughts: You have just presented a disorganized mishmash of dictionary excerpts that is very poorly presented. I'm not about to try to make sense of it all.

Stay away from anything on the internet that calls itself "free", especially free dictionaries. They will be wrong as often as not. Macmillan is wishy-washy. Cambridge, unsurprisingly, has got it right. I can't improve upon their entries. Study them, and you'll be OK.
