Respect! idiom?

Please I want to make sure about a certain usage of the word 'respect'.

For example, when there is YouTube video about someone doing something unusual, brave or very morally good, some commentators write the following:

Respect!

Does this mean the person in the video for example deserves respect and that the commentator is inspired?

Thank you
