Resist the urge to quit ...

Hi

The author of a certain book writes about meditation.

Holding onto one single thought (during meditation) is not as easy as it sounds and in the beginning your mind will want to wander off and seek out something more entertaining to do. This is the point where many people give up in frustration. Resist the urge to quit, or even to stop and tell yourself you'll start again tomorrow. This only lets that resistant part of your mind win the battle and, like a spoiled child, it will only cry all the louder next time you do what it doesn't like until you give into it again. This starts you on a downward spiral of failure that can be hard to overcome later on when you finally figure out where you first went wrong.

The bolded part doesn't make sense to me. At first I thought that the author says that I should resist the urge to quit or to stop, but looking at what's following I think this is not the case here.

That's just bad writing, that's all. "This" refers to something that is only in the writer's mind. He doesn't realize that he hasn't written it down.

OK, so I understand that the part in bold makes sense to you because it still doesn't to me.

But thanks for the answer.

Resist the urge to quit, or even to stop and tell yourself you'll start again tomorrow.

This sentence is in the imperative mood. It commands you to keep trying to learn how to meditate (resist the urge to quit), and it also commands you to keep trying this time (or even to stop) instead of hoping it will be easier later (tell yourself you'll start again tomorrow).

Yes, that's what I wanted to know. Now it's clear. I didn't understand it this way. Thanks.
