"Research shows" or "Research showed"?

Given that the research was conducted in the past, which expression should I use "Research shows" or "Research showed"?

I searched in Google, and there are 1,200,000 results with "Research showed" and 10,200,000 results with "Research shows"

By the searching outcome along, I assume present tense of the expression is correct but I have serious doubt as the research, indeed, was conducted in the past.

Please kindly explain this phenomenon to me, thanks.
