Nothing, really. Research on is usually used with more generalized objects ( I am doing research on the pig kidney ) while research into is usually followed by a more detailed object ( I am doing research into the circadian fluctuations of urine in the pig kidney ).

into: think boring/drilling into, perhaps in more detailed fashion

But really, they are equivalent.
