The intended meaning should be to point out that the area of the plant takes up 1 5000 m2 and it should somehow fit into the rest of the sentence. 
In 2008, stimulated by demands and requirements/wishes of its customers, the company XY invested in a REBAR FACILITY/REINFORCEMENT UNIT, automatic and computer-controlled production plant with the production capacity of 2 000 t per month, covering the total area of 15000 m2 of the production plant.
